Mudgett's Weeping Woman III is a powerfully moving portrait – depicted in stunning gray tones, the woman with both hands to her face, one wiping tears the other clutching a tissue. As we look at her face, we see the anguish she is experiencing transmitted in her distorted facial features and hands. Mudgett plays with perspective in the face of Weeping Woman III to allow us to see all of her face at once, mouth and nose twisting inward against her profile and in the distinctiveness of her tear shaped eyes. The stark gray/white background allows for the woman to revel in all her glory. Weeping Woman III is a wonderful work full of exquisite tonality and details, and highlighting one of Mudgett’s most interesting artistic techniques – that of exploring the dual perspectives of a human face.
